Inflatable Obstacle Course Vs the Adult-Trained Mind

I look tentatively at the dark water either side of the slippy, cylindrical bridge leading to the next obstacle and contemplate the option of sliding across it on my tummy, when suddenly a little kid sprints past me, straight across the bridge and onto the next obstacle.

It was 09:30am on a quiet Sunday morning and we were headed to get wet.

Well out of WhatsApp Image 2018-09-18 at 20.08.57(1)the two of us, I didn’t plan on getting wet – after reviewing the pictures of the inflatable obstacle course at Lagoona Aqua Park, I estimated that I would be able to jump over, through and on them without actually needing to ever touch the water.

As most of you all know – its not that I don’t mind getting wet, I just am not a big fan of swimming and have a long standing, completely unreasonable, fear of deep water.

After parking up and getting kitted out in our wet suits and buoyancy aids we headed over to a small jetty to swim across the 4 meters to the inflatable platform at the start of the course. At this point I lost all illusions of staying dry.  Squeaking, I unceremoniously jumped in and started to doggy paddle furiously – realising last minute that I could actually touch the floor with my feet and it wasn’t that cold.

This aside once on the inflatable course – it was amazing, with Trampolines, monkey bars, flippers, hurdles, climbing walls, springboards, rockers and an overhang climbing wall all bouncing merrily on the lake.

The first thing to mention here is that this experience is a great mini workout –  you use muscles you wouldn’t normally even consider existed, as you pull yourself up, throw your self round and hoist yourself over the obstacles.

Secondly it is psychologically empowering – life has imposed upon so many of us, the consequences of getting something wrong, and as such, most of us behave accordingly – always considering the ‘what could happen if…’

But on this inflatable little island there is something incredibly liberating about the fact that the worse thing that would happen is that you bounce off and into the water.

And you know what – the majority of what looks too difficult to try, turns out to be completely achievable.

There is a lot to be said for just throwing yourself in and doing what seems impossible to our adult-trained minds – very much as in life – if you never try you will never know…

Sometimes all we need to do is let our inner child loose and just go for it.
